Located behind Wailua and Kapa’a on Kauai’s east shore is the Nounou Mountain Ridge, rising 1,241 feet up from the ocean. Nounou is locally known as Sleeping Giant because it looks a bit like the profile of a giant lying on its back. (You have to stretch your imagination for this one.) Legends tells the story of the giant eating too much then laying down to sleep and never waking up again. There is a hike that takes you up the ridge and offers great views of Wailua and the valley below. The best views of Sleeping Giant are from the northern side of Wailua toward Waipouli. There is also a good viewpoint from Kipuni Place in Kapa’a.

To get there, simply view the Sleeping Giant from Hwy 56 on the east shore. There are hikes in the adventure section.
