Wailua Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to see on Kauai, just drive up and look down upon them. The falls drop 80 feet into a large round pool. While Wailua Falls are incredibly amazing when viewed from the viewpoint, if you are looking for a little more of an adventure, then try hiking to the bottom of the falls. Two trails lead you to the falls base and sparkling pool, collecting the water that gushes over the cliff. The first trial is just past the guardrail a little down the road from the overlook.

This trail is very steep and can be extremely muddy if it has been raining; however, a series of ropes will help you negotiate the short but steep trail. The next trail starts a little farther down the road at a small turnout and overlook. This trail is farther away but also a little less steep than the first. Once you’ve stumbled your way down the hill, you must then navigate your way back up the river to the falls. It is a beautiful hike up the Wailua River, but the footing in river here can be awkward. If you choose to come down the second trail, we suggest going back up to the road using the first trail because the ropes makes the steep climb a lot easier. (We saw a bunch of local kids doing it barefoot!) No matter which way you choose to go, you won’t be sorry. Seeing the falls from below is absolutely incredible. Swim in the pool or just pack a picnic and marvel at the falls. White-tailed tropical birds can usually be seen soaring overhead, adding to the majesty of the experience. If you’re still looking for a little more adventure, walk around the rocks to the left of the falls. (Be careful because the rocks are very wet and slippery.) This will take you to the space behind the falls. The force of the water rushing down before you is a perfect Kauai experience.

To get there, take Hwy 56 in Lihue to Ma’alo Road (Hwy 583 – signs will point you to the falls here). Take Ma’alo Road to the end. Beware that the last part of the road tends to have a lot of potholes, so be careful.
